For maximum production per active tile, the roof plane should be free from shading obstructions and ideally south-facing. East-facing and west-facing planes are also effective with reduced production per tile. A roof slope of 15-45 degrees is ideal. Flat roofs can still host Solar Roof tiles, but production per tile is lower.
Roof obstructions (chimneys, vents, skylights) are a key Solar-Roof advantage: solar tiles can be installed right up to the edge of an obstruction, giving more usable mounting area per roof plane than traditional rack-mounted solar panels.
